Sketchy Church Ladies

Oh what a scandalous title! You might have thought you'd find out about some sketchy church going-ons. Sorry to disappoint, the only going-ons when I'm in church is looking for people to draw...

I once read/heard (I can't remember now with all the info buzzing about) that if you want to improve your drawing skills, you need to draw everyday. Sounds like a good idea but it's hard working making the time to draw. I know, I tried and failed.

Then I heard that you should carry around a sketchbook and whenever the opportunity strikes, you whip it out and draw. So I bought myself a tiny sketchbook (what's half of an A5? Well, that's how small it is) to fit into my small bag - big bags are so last season. Ha ha, just kidding. I'm so not fashionable, I'm just over it.

So while I still don't draw daily, I draw a heck of a lot more than ever before (excluding the years between two and 18 years old - heavy drawing years those). Now I draw in restaurants, coffee shops and I draw in church. As I mentioned here, church is a great place to draw. I even feel more plugged into the sermon. And as it turns out, my sketchbook is so much better than stealing church envelopes to draw on... Oh, I guess I'm the sketchy church lady then. Shhh...

Kinda-Almost-Never Finished

Way back in June I took a day off work and social media to hangout with myself. Some people find it strange that I would want to spend my birthday alone but I'm not ashamed to admit that I like my own company (plus it was a week day). Anyhoo, let me not get all philosophical here. I just wanted to post the most recent photo of the painting I started on my birthday. I worked on it a little more and I think it's kinda-almost-never finished.

Look and Listen

I visited my folks today and remembered to scan in some sketches. These quick drawings were done on the inside of an envelope. It was all I had while sitting in church.

There are so many interesting people to draw in church. They sit still and they don't notice being drawn. Perfect!

Beach Sweep

Last Saturday, 15 September, was International Coastal Clean Up Day. My Mr and I took part in beach clean-up on Sunset Beach in Cape Town. I snapped a few pics with our point-and-shoot Canon.

The oddest thing we found was ear buds - lots of them- and small round transparent plastic chips in the sand. They look like something that could be used for packaging. There was so much litter on the beach that some people sat down to work on one spot at a time. It's a sad sorry state! But the coolest thing we saw... children so excited about picking up trash. There's hope for us.

Best Dam Lemon Cake

I baked this beauty! Actually it's the second time I've baked lemon cake this year. *Gasp!* This comes as quite a shock to myself and people who know me well. You see I'm less of a Bree and more of a Susan (AKA the domestic goddess vs. the clumsy-burn-every-meal goddess in Desperate Housewives).

I made the cake for a little tea with friends and didn't have time to take before-the-munching photos. So I had fun trying to make half a cake look pretty. Huge respect for food stylists and photographers!

Anyhoo, if you're looking for a delicious fool-proof lemon cake recipe, I found this recipe on Simply Delicious. Get the recipe here
